IN HIS OWN WORDS
My Teaching Approach
Learning should be logical, methodical and fun. All of the material I present is designed to enhance understanding of diseases. By understanding mechanisms of action one can then intervene with medical, herbal, nutritional and lifestyle choices.
The Critical Importance of Hormone Regulation to Health
Only when one can understand the function and role of all the hormones -- and know how each hormone relates and interacts with the others -- can healthcare providers effectively manage a patient’s hormonal health and wellness. Knowing that all forces in life have a positive factor and a built-in inhibitory factor also helps explain how hormones can only act for so long before the body implements autoregulation, keeping us all in balance.
Commitment to Holistic Medicine
I was inspired to be a physician and called to become an obstetrician and gynecologist. I joined the Army and was assigned to North Carolina, where my team of 12 physicians delivered 300 babies per month and 40 surgeries (pelvic and abdominal) per week. After my six years in the Army I relocated to the Washington state and worked two years at Group Health, a leading HMO, before establishing my own Private Practice in 1984. I became Board Certified in that same year by the American Board of OB-GYN.
Early in my career, I served as a teacher of young health professionals, earning the distinction of “Teacher of the Year” for medical students when serving as an Associate Clinical Professor for the University of Washington.
In my years of providing medical care to my patients I found that I was not properly trained and educated in Nutrition, Herbs, Vitamins or any of the "other" healing arts. Pharmaceutical companies had duped me into believing that the research and product that they were promoting to the public as the "best" and most researched. I later learned that some of that information was flawed and resulted in adverse patient results and product withdrawals. At the same time, patients encouraged me to look at a more natural approach to their menopause or PMS. As their primary care physician, they trusted me to advise them on the possible choices.
Ultimately, patient inquiries forced me to read and research other choices and side effects – otherwise I would have been failing my patients and myself. So I began re-learning medicine and opened up to other modalities that had stood the test of time, such as acupuncture and naturopathy. It became clear which path I had to take.
Fast-forward and I have served as a teacher and educator for more than 25 years now.
When I chose natural remedies over conventional allopathic medicine I was a lone wolf, being neither a regular MD nor a fully trained naturopath or homeopath. Standard medicine at times is a life-saving essential but I found a comfortable middle path to have my patients’ benefit from everything I had learned about all three of those disciples. That’s the basis on which I now recommend a combination of modalities to the health professionals I teach with the belief that this approach can offer be the best holistic mix for each individual patient.
It was not easy to be on the side of healing with herbs and vitamins rather than prescription medication. I paid a very hefty price for being progressive and simply different. Yet the test of time has proven that a number FDA medications have exacted a terrible toll on patients while natural herbs have served humanity for centuries, not without their own risks, but generally with a safer profile and remarkable effectiveness.
